Guest publication: what it is and what to expect
How guest publishing differs from advertising and link buying, what an author still gains without an external link, and how to evaluate a publication before submitting.
A guest publication is a text by an outside author on a site or publication where that person is not part of the editorial staff. Different outlets use the label for different models: invited expert column, guest blog, commentary or opinion contribution. So the first thing to check is not the section name but the rules: who chooses the topic, who edits the text, whether a byline appears and whether promotion is allowed.
A guest article, an advertorial and a link are different things
A guest article is valuable because of its content and the author’s name. An advertorial solves a promotional task for a company or product. Buying a link solves an SEO task. Combining all three aims in one text is risky: the reader expects an opinion or useful explanation and receives a marketing construction instead.
In the Mosaic network, direct advertising is not published inside author columns at all. External web addresses are not used in the body either. The guest-author model therefore revolves around authorship: your name, biography, publication in a specific outlet and an archive of your own columns, rather than a backlink to another site.
What remains when there is no link
First, the article itself remains, with a date, section and the publication’s masthead. Second, there is an author card under the article. Third, an author page collects that person’s texts in the publication. For someone building public expertise, this is very different from an anonymous article whose only purpose is one SEO link.
At the same time, do not promise yourself what the platform does not provide. Publication does not guarantee clients, search rankings or the profession of journalist. If your only objective is link authority, a publication that blocks external addresses is simply the wrong tool.
What a good guest article looks like
A good contribution remains useful even if the reader knows nothing about the author or how the author earns money. An architect can explain why circulation through a kitchen matters more than one extra square metre. A coach can show why progress in the first two weeks cannot predict a full year. A teacher can analyse a common exam-preparation mistake.
A bad version works in reverse: the subject exists only as an excuse to talk about a company. “Five renovation mistakes, and our firm fixes all five” is advertising. “Five renovation mistakes and how to spot them before signing off the work” is an independent useful article.
How to choose a publication
Look for a match between topic and audience rather than fame alone. A local problem belongs naturally in a regional outlet. Science fits a popular-science publication. Professional experience often works in business or general-interest media. If an article can be dropped unchanged into ten unrelated sections, it is probably too general.
Be realistic about SEO expectations
A named byline and a publication in a real outlet can strengthen a public portfolio, but that is not the same as a purchased SEO backlink. On this platform, addresses are removed from the body and the same text cannot be republished across several network outlets. A strategy based on multiplying one article across dozens of sites is therefore technically and editorially impossible.
Guest publication checklist
- the outlet accepts outside authors;
- the topic matches its readers;
- editing rules are clear in advance;
- the article is useful even if the reader buys nothing from the author;
- advertising is separated from authored content;
- you know whether there will be a byline and author page;
- a backlink is not the hidden reason for publishing.
What is valuable without a backlink
A guest article can demonstrate something that outbound links cannot measure: how an author thinks on someone else’s editorial territory. Can the writer respect the genre, answer the reader, and avoid turning the article into a presentation of themselves? To an editor, employer or potential client, that can be more convincing than a personal blog where the author controls every rule.
Subject expertise is especially visible when the article contains concrete material. An architect can break down a recurring mistake in public-space design. A trainer can explain why identical workloads produce different outcomes. A teacher can show how to recognise a memorised answer without understanding. The author’s name remains next to a useful explanation, and that association creates reputational value.
A bad pitch that looks like a link exchange
“Hello, I would like to give you a high-quality article about financial management for free. In exchange, please keep a link to my service and my company biography.” To an editor, that is not an editorial proposal but a deal for link placement. Even if the article is well written, the real purpose is obvious.
Reframe the task: “I have worked with household budgets for seven years and would like to explain three mistakes that cause an annual spending plan to collapse by February. The article will contain no promotion, two anonymised examples and a table.” Now the editor understands what the reader receives rather than what the author receives.
When the guest format is a bad fit
If you need complete control over the article, the ability to edit it constantly and a route that sends readers directly to your product, guest publishing may be the wrong format. Outside media have their own genres and limits. In that case it is more honest to use your own blog or another format than to deliver something that is effectively a landing page.
Review the author biography separately. If two bio sentences become a catalogue of services, the whole publication begins to read differently. A name, role and relevant area of experience are enough. Do not disguise sales or contact information as author background.
Where to publish it
Trade blogs, magazines, newspapers and author sections all publish outside contributors. If you want to publish your own column after one-time approval, Mosaic offers that model.
What Columnist gives you
After profile approval, you choose one of the publications available in your language and publish the column yourself. The article does not receive an external backlink, but it appears with your name, date and author card. Later articles build a separate author page. The system rejects advertising and does not allow the same text to be repeated across several outlets.
If you need an authored article rather than an SEO link, publish through Columnist at columnist.mib.news.
FAQ
Is guest publishing always free?
There is no universal rule. Some outlets accept outside contributions without payment, while others publish only staff or commissioned writers. In Columnist, the author does not pay to publish a column and the newsroom does not pay the author.
Can I put a link to my site in the article?
That depends on the outlet. On this platform, external addresses in the body are not allowed.
Is a guest article advertising?
Not automatically. If its value lies in opinion, experience or explanation, it is authored editorial content. If its primary task is to promote a company, product or service, it is advertising.
What matters more, the publication or the author’s name?
They work together. The outlet provides context, while the name connects the article to a person. Without useful content, neither creates trust on its own.
Reading is half of it. The other half is a column with your name on it, in a real publication.
